Where His Freedom Was Denied: The Historic Amendment for the Rebbe's Father

86 years after he was imprisoned by the Soviet regime, a memorial plaque was placed in honor of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, at the detention house in Kyiv. The ceremony was attended by the detention house commander, his deputy, and Rabbi Markovitch. The book 'Nitzotzei Levi Yitzchak' will be displayed there for Jewish prisoners.

At a ceremony held at the detention house in Kyiv, a memorial plaque was placed in honor of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, 86 years after he was imprisoned by the Soviet regime for his activities on behalf of the Jewish people. The ceremony was attended by the detention house commander and his deputy, who, together with Rabbi Markovitch, set the memorial plaque. The detention house commander expressed deep sorrow over the injustice done to Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, who was imprisoned without guilt solely for being a rabbi and Jewish leader, and said that this is a painful chapter in history that deserves to be remembered, recognized, and commemorated. Rabbi Markovitch said that there is deep significance in the fact that specifically on the day of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's yahrzeit, they merit to set a memorial plaque in the place where his freedom was denied only because he was a rabbi who spread Judaism. He added that this is a historic amendment and a moving closure of a circle, and that in the place where they once tried to silence the voice of Judaism and break his spirit, from today there stands a visible memorial site that tells the story of his heroism and devotion. The book 'Nitzotzei Levi Yitzchak', based on his teachings, will be displayed there for Jewish prisoners.
