A new genetic study examined DNA from 314 skeletons buried in the Little Hungarian Plain 1,400–1,800 years ago. Researchers found that the decline of Roman rule did not lead to a single barbarian invasion that replaced the population, but rather a prolonged process of migration, settlement, and mixing between local inhabitants and Northern European migrants, who became the dominant force but did not eliminate the existing population.

A new genetic study sheds light on what really happened to the inhabitants of the Roman Empire after the central government disappeared. An international team of researchers extracted and sequenced ancient DNA from 314 skeletons buried in seven cemeteries in the Little Hungarian Plain, in present-day northwestern Hungary—an area that was part of the Roman province of Pannonia. 68 of the skeletons were from the Roman period, and 246 from the period after the decline of Roman rule. The comparison between the two groups revealed a sharp change in population composition: a sharp increase in Northern European ancestry and genetic links to populations north of the Danube, consistent with the spread of the Lombards. However, the DNA does not indicate a single invasion that completely replaced the inhabitants. Instead, the researchers identified a gradual process of migration, settlement, and mixing between migrants and locals. Descendants of the Roman inhabitants remained part of the new society, alongside powerful families that accumulated power and influence. The study, conducted as part of the HistoGenes project, combines genetics, archaeology, history, and anthropology, and shows that the decline of the Roman Empire was not a single moment of collapse, but a prolonged process of change.
