Former Emirati diplomat Obaid al-Zaabi told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that the UAE will not bow to Iranian demands to administer and charge fees for crossing the Strait of Hormuz, thanks to years of anticipatory planning and a diversified economy. He rejected Oman's proposal to allow Iran control over 50% of the waterway, citing Iran's occupation of three islands since 1971. Al-Zaabi acknowledged other Gulf states may concede but argued Iran needs UAE infrastructure. He contrasted the UAE's tit-for-tat approach with Saudi Arabia's de-escalation policy, which he said has allowed Iran's proxy network to grow unchecked. He noted the UAE participated in strikes on Iran and has been attacked with missiles and drones. Al-Zaabi warned of uncontrolled escalation as Russia gets pulled into the war.
