European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sharply criticized the Israeli government's decision to publish tenders for construction in the E1 area in Judea and Samaria. She called this step unacceptable, stating that it undermines the possibility of a two-state solution by dividing the West Bank and violating the territorial integrity of Palestinian territories. Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU's commitment to a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution. Seven EU countries, as well as Canada, Australia, and a number of Muslim states, also criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to advance a tender for the construction of 1,234 housing units in the E1 area, located between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim. Opponents of the project believe its implementation could split the Palestinian Authority's territory into two parts. Earlier reports indicated that the UK and several EU countries, including Germany, are considering imposing additional sanctions against Israeli settlements and companies linked to their construction projects. Among the measures being discussed by London are restrictions on trade with settlements, personal sanctions against those involved, and other economic measures. Israel's Defense Ministry intends to resume advancing this controversial project, which the government previously abandoned in January under international pressure, promising the Biden administration not to take further steps.
