Vandalism of grave and Russian flags at IDF soldier's grave: 'Our hearts broke because of what we saw'

Unknown individuals vandalized the grave of Staff Sgt. Nir Hoffman, a medic in the Nahal Reconnaissance Battalion who was killed in a car accident in December 2025, at the cemetery in Moshav Aviezer. Doodles were drawn on the headstone, Israeli flags were torn and broken, and mementos disappeared. His father Itai told ynet: "What we saw broke our hearts." The police opened an investigation.

The family of Staff Sgt. Nir Hoffman, a medic in the Nahal Reconnaissance Battalion who was killed in a car accident in December 2025, was shocked to discover that unknown individuals had vandalized his grave at the cemetery in Moshav Aviezer, near Beit Shemesh. Doodles were drawn on the headstone, Israeli flags were torn and broken, and mementos left by his friends disappeared. His father Itai told ynet: "What we saw broke our hearts." He described the vandalism: "The front of Nir's grave is painted with childish doodles, the flags were destroyed, a pen dedicated to him was embedded in the memorial candle, and it seems that mementos that dear friends left on the headstone were stolen." The father called on society to find a way out of cycles of harm and violence, and expressed confidence in the police. Staff Sgt. Hoffman, 20 at the time of his death, dreamed of becoming a doctor, was a guide in the Bnei HaMoshavim movement, and enlisted in the Nahal with his friends from the preparatory program. The police said that upon receiving the complaint, an investigation was opened.
