Colombia's Defense Minister Jorge Mora also confirmed the signing of the agreement, noting that it will enhance the effectiveness of the fight against criminal and terrorist structures. These actions are part of Donald Trump's new anti-drug strategy called The Shield of the Americas. Earlier, under this program, the US provided assistance to Ecuador. The normalization of relations between Washington and Bogota became possible after the rise to power of right-wing President Abelardo de la Espriella, who succeeded Gustavo Petro. Previously, US actions were mainly limited to attacks on drug traffickers' vessels on the high seas.
