The United States has expanded sanctions pressure on Iran by imposing restrictions on 27 airlines and a number of related organizations. According to the US Treasury, the sanctions cover 36 entities and are designed to limit Iran's access to aircraft, aviation technology and services, as well as the international financial system. A Treasury official stated: 'In essence, we are removing the entire aviation sector of the Iranian economy from the market.' The Treasury claims that Iran uses the aviation sector to transport weapons and illegal cargo. The restrictions affected not only Iranian companies but also organizations in the UAE, Turkey, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan that helped Iran acquire American aircraft through intermediaries and re-export schemes. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the new sanctions part of the 'Operation Economic Outcast' campaign aimed at weakening Iran's international financial ties. He warned foreign companies that cooperation with Iranian airlines could lead to loss of access to the global financial system. The new sanctions expand on July restrictions against entities linked to Mahan Air.
