University of Haifa to award honorary doctorate to Amos Gitai

The University of Haifa announced this evening (Tuesday, August 25, 2026) that it will award an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree to filmmaker Amos Gitai, a native of the city and one of the most prominent Israeli filmmakers in the world. The degree will be awarded in recognition of his contributions to Israeli and international cinema, the development of a unique cinematic language, and his ongoing engagement with complex social and political issues. The university noted that Gitai is also being honored for his deep connection to Haifa, which occupies a central place in his work. University President Prof. Gur Alroey said: "Amos Gitai is one of the most prominent and influential Israeli creators in the world. For decades, he has chosen to directly address the most complex and painful questions of Israeli society and turn them into work that provokes thought and dialogue." Gitai was born in Haifa in 1950, studied architecture at the Technion and the University of California, Berkeley, and after being wounded in the Yom Kippur War, turned to filmmaking. His notable films include "Kippur," "Kedma," "Free Zone," and "Rabin: The Last Day."
