Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden have identified a serious health threat for elderly people — high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the blood. These persistent environmental pollutants accumulate in fatty tissue and enter the body mainly through food, especially fatty fish (herring, wild salmon), meat, and dairy products. During a 10-year observation of the health of over a thousand people, scientists found that individuals with high PCB levels have a 50% increased risk of premature death compared to those with minimal levels of these substances. PCBs are linked to disruption of the endocrine and immune systems, increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. To minimize risk, it is recommended to limit consumption of fatty fish, choose organic products, and support environmental initiatives.
