Robert Shagaev, a former Ukrainian Navy officer, was killed by an explosive device planted in a trash can in Crimea. Witnesses said the blast was so powerful that residents initially thought a drone had struck a building. Russian Telegram channels confirmed a person was killed but did not release their identity. As of the afternoon, no official confirmation from Russian or Ukrainian authorities that the deceased is Shagaev, and no claim of responsibility from Ukrainian intelligence services. Shagaev was considered a traitor in Ukraine due to his actions during the Russian takeover of Crimea in 2014. According to the Ukrainian investigation, after Russian forces surrounded the Zaporizhzhia, the only submarine then in service with the Ukrainian Navy, he defected to the Russian side and continued serving in the Black Sea Fleet. Ukrainian authorities opened proceedings against him on suspicion of high treason. After his defection, Shagaev continued his Russian military career and was appointed deputy commander of the 4th Submarine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet. The unit operates Varshavyanka-class submarines capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles. According to Ukrainian reports, the brigade's submarines have participated in missile strikes against targets in Ukraine since the Russian invasion. The elimination joins a series of explosions and assassinations against Russian officers and officials since the war began, some of which Moscow has attributed to Kyiv's intelligence services. In this case, there is currently no public evidence to determine that Ukraine is behind the explosion.
