Two aliases, two guesthouses, and seven bullets: The assassination that led to an unprecedented indictment in Israel
An unprecedented indictment has been filed against three residents of the north for the double murder of a key prosecution witness and a private investigator accompanying him. The murder was carried out after detailed preparations that included the use of aliases, stays at two guesthouses in the Golan Heights, and surveillance of the victim. The Northern District Prosecutor's Office filed an unprecedented indictment against three residents of the north, Sa'id Madah, Ronen Araida, and Iman Ibrahim, for the double murder of Marwan Abu Shahin, a key prosecution witness in an extortion case, and private investigator Sa'ada Sa'ada, who happened to be at the scene. The murder took place in the village of Buq'ata in the Golan Heights. According to the indictment, the assassins meticulously planned the murder: Madah arrived in the village in mid-June, stayed at two guesthouses under aliases, and surveyed the area. On the night of the murder, the other two defendants sneaked into the guesthouse. The next day, after surveillance, one of the assassins fired seven shots at close range at the two men in Abu Shahin's car. The bullets struck Abu Shahin in the head and chest, and Sa'ada in the back, causing their deaths. Araida was arrested shortly afterward, and is also charged with a shooting at a shawarma restaurant in Yirka, in which the restaurant owner was seriously wounded. Evidence includes security footage, fingerprints, and DNA. The prosecution made first-time use of a law mandating a mandatory life sentence for the murder of a witness in a criminal trial. The elimination of Abu Shahin poses a challenge to the original extortion case, and the prosecution has sought to use his police testimony as evidence.
