The New York Times revealed this morning new details about the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump, which last month led to an unusual deception exercise. As part of it, Trump was taken off his new Air Force One, secretly transferred via a catering truck to a C-32A aircraft, and flown out of Turkish borders at the end of the NATO summit in Ankara. According to the report, US intelligence relied on several intelligence channels and learned of a specific threat of a surface-to-air missile attack against the presidential aircraft. A person near the summit was spotted with a shoulder-launched missile, and the Iranians knew exactly where Trump was staying in Ankara, including which floor of the building. The deception exercise took place on July 8, a day after the US resumed strikes on Iran. The operation was first revealed by the Washington Post and also involved Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Trump flew to Britain under a cryptic callsign, while the older Air Force One served as a decoy. The White House issued a statement saying the president arrived aboard the older aircraft, even though according to the report he flew on the C-32A.
