Just days before his burial, an unprecedented and bitter succession dispute erupted over his heir. The royal tribal elders declared the popular news anchor, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijangoma, 56, as the next regent, asserting traditional authority to choose the 'Omukama' – the local title for king. However, this declaration was rejected by the late king's close family. His sister, Princess Ruth Kumentale, stated that the king left a 2022 will designating his young son as heir, accusing those behind the declaration of creating 'confusion and chaos.' The king's mother, Queen Best Kamigisa, claimed that bodyguards were removed and soldiers deployed, restricting the family's movement. The existence of the king's son was first revealed by Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni days after his death. The Tooro Kingdom is a traditional kingdom with no official political authority but holds cultural significance in western Uganda. The king's body was returned to Uganda, and his funeral is expected to take place at the royal tombs in Fort Portal.
