The study followed 107 mother-child pairs, measured PFAS levels during pregnancy and after birth, and examined the children's health status up to age 11. It found that children exposed to higher levels of PFAS mixtures tended to have higher levels of calprotectin in stool—a biomarker for intestinal inflammation. The researchers emphasize that this is an observational study, so it cannot be concluded that exposure causes inflammation, but the findings reinforce the understanding that pregnancy and infancy are sensitive periods for environmental influences.
