A new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth has revealed a mysterious, ancient structure in the depths of the Earth beneath Connecticut. A team of researchers from Yale and the University of Minnesota created the most detailed three-dimensional map of the region to date, using seismic tomography. Alongside the known thermal anomaly, the 'northern Appalachian anomaly,' a narrow, nearly vertical column was discovered that descends hundreds of kilometers deeper, to a depth of about 660 kilometers. Unlike the hot blob, seismic waves travel through the column at higher speeds, suggesting colder, denser rock. The researchers hypothesized that the column may be part of the continental lithosphere that detached and sank, a process known as 'lithospheric delamination.' If so, the hot blob and the cold column may be two parts of the same story. A separate 2025 study suggested that the anomaly originated from the breakup of Greenland and Canada 80-90 million years ago, and it is migrating southwest at a rate of about 20 kilometers per million years. Despite the headline, there is no immediate threat to New York, and the movement is too slow to be felt in human history. The discovery may explain why the Appalachian Mountains remain relatively high despite erosion.
