The gynecologist who committed sexual offenses against patients will be able to return to treating women

The Jerusalem District Court rejected an appeal seeking to permanently revoke the license of Dr. Benny Shachter, who was convicted of committing indecent acts by fraud against three patients and sentenced to 18 months in prison. The decision to suspend his license for seven years remains in place, and he will be able to return to practicing medicine in April 2028.

The Jerusalem District Court rejected an appeal aimed at permanently revoking the medical license of Dr. Benny Shachter, a gynecologist convicted of committing indecent acts by fraud against three patients. Shachter was sentenced to 18 months in actual imprisonment and compensation of 145,000 shekels to the complainants. The Ministry of Health's disciplinary committee recommended by a majority vote to permanently revoke his license, but the official in charge of judicial decisions at the Ministry of Health decided to suffice with suspending his license for only seven years, until April 2028. The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel and the Women's Lobby appealed this decision, and the Ministry of Health also supported permanent revocation and sought to continue the appeal on its own. The court ruled that the organizations have no right to appeal the official's decision, and also rejected the Ministry of Health's request to step into their shoes. The implication is that the suspension decision remains in place, and Shachter will be able to return to practicing medicine at the end of the suspension period in April 2028.
