Fragments of an ancient ship discovered over a decade ago off the southern coast of Croatia, near a remote island, have revealed an unprecedented gold treasure in its scope. Among the findings: gold coins, buckles adorned with rubies, emeralds, and pearls, and a gold seal ring bearing the image of the emperor. Archaeologists determined that the ship, dating from the 7th or 8th century AD, carried a high-ranking dignitary and their entourage. Pavel Dugonjić from the Croatian Institute for Conservation noted that this is the largest gold treasure ever found on a shipwreck in the Mediterranean, weighing over half a kilogram. Researchers emphasize that the discovery provides a glimpse into the transition period between the late Roman Empire and the Middle Ages.
