Terrible accident in Switzerland: horses bolted with a carriage full of tourists (PHOTO)

In the Swiss canton of Graubünden, an accident occurred involving horse-drawn carriages returning from an excursion in the Engadin valley. During a descent on a mountain road, the brakes of one of the carriages failed. The driver tried to steer the team of three horses to a flatter area, but one of the horses stumbled and fell. The uncontrolled carriage crashed into a roadside tree at high speed. Passengers were thrown from the vehicle. A 73-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The injured were evacuated to hospitals with the help of three helicopters and four ambulances. Other tourists received assistance on site in Pontresina. Most of the trip participants reside permanently in Switzerland. Police and prosecutors are investigating the causes and details of the incident.
