Lebanon demanded that Iran-appointed ambassador Mohammad Reza Sheibani leave the country after his visa expired on August 24. Foreign Minister Youssef Raji emphasized that the visa would not be renewed and that the decision to expel the diplomat, declared persona non grata back in March, is final and not subject to discussion. The diplomatic conflict between Lebanon and Iran began in March. On March 24, Beirut revoked its consent for Sheibani's appointment as ambassador and demanded he leave the country by March 29, while the Lebanese ambassador to Tehran was summoned for consultations. Lebanese authorities explained the decision as a violation of diplomatic norms and Iran's interference in the country's internal affairs. Sheibani refused to leave Lebanon. In Tehran, they stated he would continue his duties, and his position was supported by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Hezbollah. Lebanese authorities have the right to forcibly expel Sheibani, but an alternative option is being discussed — changing his diplomatic status and granting a special residence permit for former diplomats.
