Tel Aviv's Animix festival combines political satire, cartoons with tributes, memorials, lectures

The Animix International Animation, Comics, and Caricature Festival returns to the Tel Aviv Cinematheque from August 4-8, offering five days of exhibitions, performances, film screenings, workshops, and meetings with leading Israeli and international artists. Now in its 26th year, Animix is Israel's largest annual event devoted to animation, comics, illustration, and caricature. This year's program reflects the fraught political and social climate in Israel, with artists responding to elections, war, trauma, extremism, and the events of October 7 through satire, personal storytelling, and animation. The guest of honor is Moroccan cartoonist Saad Jalal, who will deliver a lecture on the role of cartoonists. The lifetime achievement award goes to Israeli illustrator Dovi Keich. The festival will also pay tribute to Iranian-French graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi, who died in June, and to late satirist Yair Garbuz. Other events include competitions, the Shukomix comics fair, and a performance by Danni Bassan of T-Slam.
