Syrian President al-Julani: Working on a Security Agreement with Israel That Will Pave the Way for Peace
Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara (al-Julani) said in an interview with Al Jazeera that his country is working on a security agreement with Israel, mediated by several countries, which could lead to broader peace, while maintaining its claim to the Golan Heights. He emphasized that Damascus is avoiding military confrontation and does not intend to intervene militarily in Lebanon.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara (al-Julani) said today (Sunday) in an interview with Al Jazeera that his country is working to achieve a security agreement with Israel, with the mediation and involvement of several countries. According to him, such an agreement could later open the door to a broader political settlement. Al-Shara emphasized that Damascus does not want a military confrontation with Israel, but does not intend to give up its claim to the Golan Heights. He said: "We are avoiding confrontation with Israel, we have no interest in that. We are working to reach a security agreement with Israel with the participation of a group of countries. If the security agreement with Israel succeeds, it will pave the way for comprehensive peace without giving up Syria's right to the Golan." Al-Shara dismissed the possibility of Syrian military intervention in Lebanon, saying that Damascus is discussing with the Lebanese government solutions that will bring Lebanon to a safe place. He expressed support for Lebanon and its army holding a monopoly on weapons and decisions of war and peace. The Syrian president also addressed the economic situation, saying that lifting sanctions will not be effective without removing Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. He noted a slowdown in the implementation of the agreement with the Kurds, and discussions with Russia on its military bases have not yet concluded. Meanwhile, Syrian media reported IDF activity in Daraa province, including the entry of military vehicles and the placement of a checkpoint, as well as artillery fire in the Quneitra area.
