The study followed 172 participants aged 55 and over for four years using memory tests and MRI scans. It found that in people with mild gum disease, each lost tooth accelerated brain shrinkage at a rate equivalent to nearly one additional year of aging. In contrast, in people with severe gum disease, retaining more teeth was associated with faster shrinkage, with each additional tooth showing an effect equivalent to 1.3 years of brain aging. Dr. Satoshi Yamaguchi from Tohoku University, a geriatric dentist, explained that the results highlight the importance of maintaining dental health rather than just relying on teeth, and that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is critical. The study provides another reason to take better care of your teeth.
