Shopped for Discounted Tomatoes, Gets 20,000 Shekels: Shufersal Failed to Honor Deal at Checkout and Will Compensate Customer

A small claims court in Kfar Saba ordered the Shufersal supermarket chain to pay 20,000 shekels in compensation to a customer who was not honored a deal on cherry tomatoes at the checkout. The judge criticized the chain's conduct, which also refused to honor discounted prices on blueberries and avocados in another case. Shufersal has filed a request for leave to appeal.

A small claims court in Kfar Saba ordered the Shufersal supermarket chain to pay 20,000 shekels in compensation to a customer who came to buy cherry tomatoes on sale, after the store refused to charge her the lower price listed on the sign at the checkout, claiming that the variety she chose ('Lublo') was not included in the promotion. Judge Ofir Ktavi-Rivlin sharply criticized the chain's conduct, after it emerged that in another case presented by the customer, Shufersal advertised lower prices for blueberries and avocados in a promotional flyer and refused to honor them. The ruling stated that Shufersal 'lures its customers to its store via a promotional text message whose content is not honored by it, and also misleads them through price signs that do not match the much higher checkout price.' The judge determined that this constitutes serious and improper conduct, and that most consumers would not notice the overcharge or would not bother to sue. Shufersal has filed a request for leave to appeal the ruling.
