The court sentenced Shelly Shainker, a daycare assistant in Netanya, to seven years in prison for a series of serious offenses of abuse and assault against toddlers. According to the indictment, the offenses were committed over one month, between May 29 and June 27, 2024, on 15 occasions when she worked at the daycare. Shainker was convicted of nine counts of abuse of a helpless minor by a responsible person, 33 counts of assault of a helpless minor by a responsible person causing actual bodily harm, and two counts of aggravated assault. The main charge involved the abuse of a 16-month-old toddler on seven occasions. The acts included deliberately dropping her from a chair onto the floor, pulling her arms and dropping her onto the activity mat, pushing her forcefully toward a chair, and pushing her while she was in a playpen crying. In addition to the prison sentence, the defendant was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay compensation to the complainants, ranging from ten thousand to tens of thousands of shekels. Shainker was acquitted of additional charges on legal grounds, due to the principle of absorption of assault offenses within the abuse offense.
