"Sensitive Issue": IDF Concern Over Information Leakage Due to Use of Chinese Drones

IDF sources warn of operational information leakage due to widespread and uncontrolled use of Chinese-made drones on the front lines. Although the military has tightened access and banned Chinese vehicles from bases, it still allows the use of Chinese technology in drones, raising fears that the enemy could monitor troop activity and location.

IDF sources are warning of sensitive operational information leakage due to widespread and uncontrolled use of Chinese-made drones on the front lines. At the beginning of the war, about three years ago, massive donations flowed to the IDF to fund weapons, including various types of drones, some of the most advanced in the world, intended for collection, observation, reconnaissance, and attack. The Ground Forces began collecting the drones to regulate them, after discovering an imbalance between units and inconsistency in the quantity per battalion. Meanwhile, the IDF is conducting massive procurement under strict standards. Information security experts warn of the risk of integrating Chinese drones into operational activity, especially in areas where units are trying to conceal secret plans and maneuver operations. While the IDF has tightened access and banned Chinese vehicles from bases, similar to the Shin Bet, it still allows widespread use of Chinese technology in drones. One source noted that the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit is careful not to use Chinese technology that could collect information and transmit it back. Chinese drones are sold with an app that knows which similar drone is in the area, raising concerns that the enemy could monitor troop activity and location. Another source argued that the IDF must also regulate the use of frequencies, as frequencies were allocated to the Ground Forces but are not enforced. Chinese drones are significantly cheaper than Israeli, American, or European alternatives, so the military prefers them. IDF Spokesperson's response: The IDF operates according to mandatory security regulations and standards; systems that do not meet requirements will need adjustments and will not be approved for use.
