Scientists find unexpected changes in those who drink a lot of coffee
A study by Finnish scientists has found a link between regular coffee consumption, body composition, and hormonal profile. Coffee lovers were found to have less fat tissue and more muscle mass, while men showed changes in testosterone levels. The study is observational and does not prove a causal relationship.
A study conducted at the University of Oulu in Finland found that people who regularly consume large amounts of coffee have less fat tissue, including visceral fat, and more muscle mass. These differences persisted even with the same body mass index. Men also showed changes in their hormonal profile: higher levels of total and bioavailable testosterone, as well as SHBG, with slightly reduced levels of free testosterone. The associations were less pronounced in women. The study is observational, based on data from 2,264 participants, and does not prove that coffee itself causes these changes. The scientists emphasize that the results are not a basis for changing dietary recommendations.
