Rights Group Demands Treatment for Activist Saqf al-Hait in PA Prisons

The group 'Lawyers for Justice', a Palestinian human rights organization, called for immediate and urgent treatment for political activist and human rights defender Mazid Saqf al-Hait, held in Barghasha prison under the Palestinian Authority's security forces. The group said it is following his detention conditions with great concern, noting he was arrested on 17/6 under a detention order for failing to pay a debt, while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Nablus Specialized Hospital after a suspected stroke in an artery supplying the neck and brain. It added that after his arrest, he was transferred to Nablus police station, where he reported being assaulted because he could not stand during the count, resulting in broken ribs. The group considered his subsequent transfer to Barghasha prison near Jenin instead of Nablus prison, closer to his family, as a punitive measure due to his political views. It demanded urgent treatment and transfer to a specialized hospital, and an independent investigation into allegations of torture and ill-treatment, stressing that denying a detainee medical care is a serious human rights violation.
