A record 52,000 pilgrims have arrived in Uman for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. The Israeli police, together with their Ukrainian counterparts, are ensuring security amid the war and curfew.
A record 52,000 pilgrims have arrived in Uman for the celebration of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah). Police spokesman Michael Zingerman said that for a city with a population of about 70,000, such a number of guests creates an extremely high burden. The situation is complicated by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine: almost every night, air raid sirens sound in the city, and a nighttime curfew is in effect. Israeli police are working jointly with the Ukrainian police to ensure safety and public order. The Israeli delegation arrived at the request of the Ukrainian police. Zingerman noted that without the help of their Israeli colleagues, Ukrainian law enforcement would find it much more difficult to handle the situation. The delegation is commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Dmitry Samosh. The officers are spending the holiday away from their families, serving under heightened alert.
