Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Arieh King is calling for the removal of King George V's name from one of the city's main streets, against the backdrop of the escalation in British policy toward Israel. King submitted the demand this morning (Wednesday) to Mayor Moshe Lion, who also serves as chairman of the Street Naming Committee. In his appeal, he directly links the initiative to the hardening of British policy toward Israel. The appeal comes a day after the British government announced its intention to advance a series of steps against settlements in the West Bank, chief among them a future ban on importing goods from settlements and legislation enabling targeted sanctions. The steps have not yet taken effect and their implementation is expected to take months. Instead of George V's name, King proposes the name 'Tabor Ha'aretz', taken from the Book of Ezekiel. The initiative comes as demands for retaliatory steps against the British declaration are heard in the political system.
