Protest after lawyer's murder: 'Black flag - we will leave the courtrooms'

The Israel Bar Association announced a series of protest measures following the murder of a lawyer in Rishon LeZion today (Tuesday). In a joint statement by the head of the association, Adv. Amit Becher, along with district heads and members of the National Council, a 'black flag' was raised. The association's leaders called the murder 'a shocking event that must bring about a change in the attitude of decision-makers toward the violence that is consuming every good part of Israeli society.' Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., lawyers will leave courtrooms across the country and stand for two minutes of silence in memory of their colleague. Additionally, it was decided to establish a special team to strengthen the emergency hotline for threatened lawyers, and to establish a 'coordinating body' in partnership with additional professional organizations, including the Medical Association and teachers' organizations. Meanwhile, the police continue to investigate the circumstances of the murder. The suspect, a 32-year-old resident of Ramla who was known to the police from previous offenses, surrendered about two hours after the murder. In the investigation, he said that there was a financial dispute between him and the lawyer, and that the lawyer was supposed to transfer 15,000 shekels to him. He came to the office to demand the money, and during the argument he shot him four times.
