Previously unknown virus detected in China, seven people dead
Chinese scientists have discovered a previously unknown virus, ALTNV, transmitted through the bites of Asian longhorned ticks. The virus was found in 329 out of 3,163 individuals tested across four provinces. Seven patients co-infected with ALTNV and DBV have died (fatality rate 18.4%). The first case dates back to 2009.
Chinese scientists have reported the discovery of a previously unknown virus, named Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV). It is believed to be transmitted to humans through the bites of Asian longhorned ticks. Cases of infection were identified in four Chinese provinces, including Hubei, where Wuhan is located. Researchers analyzed samples from 3,163 individuals; ALTNV was detected in 329 patients (10.4%). The first known case of infection dates back to 2009. Particular concern was raised by cases of simultaneous infection with ALTNV and DBV—such a combination was found in 38 people, seven of whom died (fatality rate 18.4%). Patients with dual infection more often developed severe complications, including respiratory and kidney dysfunction. The virus was detected in approximately 1.3% of 47,000 ticks studied, and among Asian longhorned ticks, in 1.75% of cases. Laboratory experiments showed that this tick species can transmit the virus to mice. There is currently no specific treatment for ALTNV. Scientists still need to determine how widespread the new virus is and which tick species can transmit it to humans.
