Two radical candidates for the US House of Representatives, Darlene Avila-Chevallier and Claire Valdez, backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, are planning an unprecedented move: voting against the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget next year. The move could lead to a cut of over $215 million in vital counterterrorism funding for New York City, under the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) established in 2003 as a direct response to the September 11 attacks. Mamdani himself, along with Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Tish James, have previously complained about delays in transferring these funds. Mamdani emphasized the importance of funding for fully equipping 12 bomb squads across the city and for effective fire department communication in the event of an attack. The candidates are operating with the assistance of "The Squad" members in Congress, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, aiming to create a strong socialist bloc in Washington. A federal legislative source said the two do not care about the economic harm to New York and their constituents.
