The researchers recommend culturally and religiously tailored information, and emphasize the influence of doctors: 62% were influenced by their recommendation, and 80% would consult them.

A new study by researchers from Ashkelon Academic College, Prof. Keren Dopelt and Dr. Yifat Findeling, examined the barriers to genetic testing in Israel. The study found a link between testing uptake and level of religiosity. Nearly half of respondents cited high cost or lack of insurance coverage as a major barrier, and slightly fewer attributed non-performance to religious and cultural values. In the Arab society, more significant results were found: despite higher rates of consanguineous marriage, which increase the risk of recessive hereditary diseases, less than 15% participate in carrier testing. The researchers conclude that general awareness is insufficient, and there is a need for culturally and religiously tailored information that respects the value system of each community. It also emerges that a doctor's recommendation has a decisive influence: it influenced 62% of participants, and 80% would consult a doctor. As the level of knowledge increases, attitudes become more positive and the likelihood of actual performance increases. The study emphasizes that genetic testing is perceived as a social and cultural issue, not just medical, and that there is a need for accessible and tailored awareness programs, strengthening the role of medical professionals, and directly addressing concerns, stigmas, and social barriers.
