On the edge of the "Yellow Line".. a wedding under the whistle of bullets in Gaza
Just 500 meters from the "Yellow Line" south of Gaza's Zaytoun neighborhood, Bilal al-Turk (25) held his wedding in a tent beside the rubble of his destroyed home, after Israeli shelling forced him to flee in August 2025. According to camp director Sami al-Dash, 30 grooms held weddings in the area over eight months. Bilal, an unemployed aluminum technician, relies on aid and a stall in the "Saraya" market, and faces daily fear of live fire and drones with his wife, but insists that "life does not stop."
In the Zaytoun neighborhood south of Gaza, just 500 meters from the "Yellow Line," young Bilal al-Turk (25) held his wedding in a tent beside the rubble of his destroyed home. Israeli shelling forced his family to flee on August 10, 2025, and upon his return he found the family building reduced to rubble. Bilal had to gather wooden planks from under the rubble to build his tent, and planted mint beds to create an atmosphere resembling "home." According to camp director Sami al-Dash, 30 grooms held weddings in the area's camps over eight months, indicating a broader phenomenon. Bilal, an aluminum technician unemployed for three years, relies on aid and a stall in the "Saraya" market, and walks four kilometers daily. He describes the daily fear of "sweeping operations" with live fire and drones, but insists that "life does not stop," hoping to obtain a small "caravan" to protect him from summer heat and winter cold.
