Not only Ohana in the crosshairs: Amit Becher's demand from the senior legal official

Chairman of the Israel Bar Association, Amit Becher, sent a letter to Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and Knesset Legal Adviser Sagit Afik demanding compliance with the High Court ruling to elect a new State Comptroller, approximately 50 days after Matanyahu Englman's term ended. Becher accused Ohana of contempt for the court ruling, the court, and the foundations of democracy.

Chairman of the Israel Bar Association, Amit Becher, sent an official letter to Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and Knesset Legal Adviser Sagit Afik, demanding immediate compliance with the High Court ruling to elect a new State Comptroller. The appeal comes about 50 days after the end of outgoing Comptroller Matanyahu Englman's term, following a High Court ruling that found a substantial flaw in the second round of voting for the Comptroller held on June 3, 2026. The ruling determined that the flaw could have affected the election results. Becher cited the law requiring the election of the incoming Comptroller within 45 days of the outgoing Comptroller's vacancy, and warned that non-compliance with the ruling constitutes contempt of the court ruling, the court, the State of Israel, the Knesset, and the foundations of democracy and the rule of law. He asked: "When the Knesset Speaker does not comply with a court ruling, what will the citizen do?"
