Night of terror in Thailand: Dozens of mysterious explosions and arsons in the south of the country

Thai police are investigating dozens of arsons and explosions that occurred last night (Sunday) across the country, with most incidents concentrated in Narathiwat province in the south. During the night, reports were received of at least 50 arsons, and explosive devices were planted and detonated at several of the fire sites. Two women were injured, one of whom suffered severe injuries to her chest and hand. The incidents occurred between 8 PM and midnight (local time), and according to police, were intended to sow fear in the country. Following the events, a nightly curfew was imposed in Narathiwat. No one has claimed responsibility for the arsons and explosions. The incidents come less than a month after a deadly attack in the same province, in which gunmen killed five Thai soldiers. In the provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani in southern Thailand, a continuous conflict has been ongoing since 2004 between Muslim rebels and the Buddhist majority, which has claimed at least 7,000 victims. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is expected to visit the neighboring Songkhla province next week to discuss the security situation.
