The Department of Environmental Protection checked the sewer system and found no damage to infrastructure. This is the latest in a series of similar incidents this year: in May, groups of people were documented entering and exiting manholes in Brooklyn and Queens during nighttime hours. In one case, seven people were seen emerging from a manhole after spending more than two hours underground. In another case in Astoria, three people were documented lifting a manhole cover and entering. Law enforcement officials assessed that these may be people searching for valuables that fell or were washed into the sewer system. Police emphasized that no evidence of terrorist activity or a threat to the public was found, nor has it been proven that all the cases are connected. Members of the police emergency unit entered the sewer system to check if any hazardous material was left there, but nothing was found.
