A new study published in the European Heart Journal found micro- and nanoplastic particles in the blood of 84% of patients who had an acute heart attack, compared to only 40% among chronic heart disease patients and 32% among people with normal arteries. The study was conducted in Italy on 61 patients who underwent coronary catheterization, and blood samples were taken directly from the coronary arteries. The most common type of plastic was polyethylene, used for bags, bottles, and food packaging. The researchers emphasize that this is only a possible link, not proof that the particles cause heart attacks. It is possible that the particles serve as a marker for exposure to other risk factors such as air pollution or smoking. Experts recommend reducing exposure to plastic, for example by avoiding heating food in plastic containers and using glass or stainless steel utensils, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
