New Study Reveals: 1 in 5 Students Develops AI Dependence

A new Israeli study, published in the journal Education Sciences, found that one in five students develops dependence on artificial intelligence tools. The study, conducted among 478 students, reveals that as proficiency with these tools increases, so does the tendency to rely on them. A link was found between seeking help from friends and lecturers and AI dependence. The researchers recommend adapting assessment methods and integrating independent learning skills.

A new Israeli study, conducted by Dr. Hilit Meisel, Dr. Maya Kalman Halevi, Dr. Miri Sarid, and Dr. Roni Totian from the Department of Education at the Western Galilee Academic College, examined the factors leading to students' dependence on artificial intelligence. The study, published in the international journal Education Sciences, included 478 students from universities and colleges across the country. Four different learning patterns were found. One of the most notable findings: among students with high proficiency in AI tools, 32.6% used them in a controlled manner, while 18.4%—nearly one in five—relied on them heavily and reported emotional dependence. This group was characterized by poorer study habits, poor time management, and low self-efficacy. Dr. Miri Sarid, head of the Department of Education, explained that a significant link was found between the tendency to seek help from friends and lecturers and the degree of AI dependence. According to her, skilled students may give up independent thinking too quickly. The researchers recommend adapting assessment methods to examine the thinking process and integrating independent learning skills such as time management and perseverance.
