Dan Houser, former co-head of Rockstar Games and key writer of the iconic GTA and Red Dead Redemption franchises, publicly explained for the first time why he decided to leave the studio. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, the developer admitted that the reason was simple emotional and physical burnout after completing the development of GTA 5 and RDR 2. According to him, colleagues long tried to dissuade him from resigning, but he realized he simply could not endure another similar production cycle. Houser emphasized that creating games of this level required colossal resources. Combining hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue and a huge number of complex interconnected mechanics into a single working organism is incredibly hard work that completely consumes personal life. The writer left Rockstar in early 2020, having given the company more than twenty years. During that time, he worked not only on GTA and RDR, but also on hits like Bully and Max Payne 3. Currently, the developer heads Absurd Ventures, a company he founded in 2024. The studio is busy building the multimedia universe Absurdaverse. Recently, the team teased a project, showing twenty extraordinary characters – among them are heroes in GTA style, as well as Vikings or mysterious hooded figures. As part of Absurdaverse, they plan to release not only animated materials, but also an adventure action game with a comedic slant and a focus on story. In addition, Houser is simultaneously working on two other independent franchises: the graphic novel American Caper and the audio drama A Better Paradise.
