Greece will procure a multi-layered air defense system from Israel for approximately €3.5 billion, to be integrated into its Achilles Shield defense system. The deal, approved by Greece's National Security Council, includes Rafael's David's Sling for the upper layer, Israel Aerospace Industries' Barak MX for the middle layer, and Rafael's Spyder for the lower layer. The procurement reflects a growing regional alliance against Turkey, which threatens both Greece and Israel. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Greece must maintain a strong warning capability, as Turkey is eight times larger. The system is expected to be fully deployed in 35 months, with at least 25% local production. The deal also includes transfer of knowledge and source code for Greek independence. Greece's defense budget has increased from $7.4 billion in 2023 to an estimated $8.6 billion in 2026, as part of a $28 billion investment plan by 2036.
