Israel's National AI Directorate and the Finance Ministry's Accountant General's Department announced on Tuesday the launch of 'Project Nexus,' a new initiative to develop and build a locally produced quantum computer, alongside investments in physical AI solutions. The announcement, centered on Government Decision 4255 and the national AI strategy, aims to secure Israel's place at the forefront of global AI and ensure technological sovereignty. The initiative will include publishing a Request for Information (RFI) to advance foundational models and map market capabilities. Quantum computing has been a government priority since 2018, with previous achievements including a domestically built quantum computer in 2024 and a collaboration between startup Qedma and IBM on a 72-qubit chip. Physical AI applications include autonomous drones and energy management systems. The announcement quotes Brig.-Gen. (Res.)
