Memorial Conference for Maran Ovadia Yosef zt"l Officially Canceled

The Director-General of the Ministry of Religious Services has officially notified the Jerusalem Municipality of the cancellation of the memorial conference for Maran Ovadia Yosef, which was scheduled to take place at Binyanei Ha'Uma in early October. The reason: a High Court ruling and the Attorney General's position, which prevent government funding at this stage. Meanwhile, the High Court is expected to hear Shas's petition against postponing the event until after the elections.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Religious Services, Yehuda Avidan, officially notified the Jerusalem Municipality of the cancellation of the memorial conference for Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l. The event was planned to take place at Binyanei Ha'Uma from October 6 to 8. In the letter, it was stated that due to a High Court ruling and the position of the Attorney General, it is not possible to fund the event at this stage. The ministry noted that alternatives were examined but ultimately it was decided to cancel the orders, and if an alternative event is decided upon, further discussions will be held with the municipality. Meanwhile, the High Court is expected to hear Shas's petition against the decision to postpone the event until after the elections. The decision sparks public interest given Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's status in the Sephardic Haredi community and the controversy surrounding the involvement of the High Court and legal counsel in religious matters.
