He opened fire, killing his parents Dana and Barb, his grandmother Evelyn, his sister Megan Gekiere and her four children - Owen (13), Landon (15), Charlotte (12), and Chloe (7). After the shooting, Smith set the house on fire, tried to flee, and later shot himself and died. Twelve-year-old Charlotte managed to call the police during the shooting and tried to save her family members. Megan's husband, Adam Gekiere, was at work during the massacre. Megan's ex-husband, Brad Ireland, said there were "a lot of red flags" around Smith, who was a recluse spending most of his days in his room in front of the computer. This is the 22nd mass murder case in the US since the beginning of the year, and in 15 of the cases the background was a family conflict.
