Berg had set out on an extended solo hike and was due to return home on September 5, but did not make it to the ferry as planned. The rescue occurred last Saturday when civilian hikers spotted him in the remote and difficult-to-access park terrain. He suffered various injuries and hypothermia after spending a week alone without cell reception. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from the US Coast Guard extracted him from the area. His wife, Debbie, said her husband had embarked on a long hike in the park, which spans 207 square miles. The search operation involved police forces, K9 units, the National Park Service, and other entities, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Isle Royale Seaplanes, and the No One Left Behind K9 search unit.
