Likud Court to Hear Petitions Against Voting Results
The Likud party court will convene today to hear petitions against the results of the party convention vote, particularly against the clause allowing incumbent Knesset members to run in districts. The Likud party court will convene today (Sunday) at 13:00 to hear all petitions filed following the vote at the party convention. At the center of the petitions is the decision to allow incumbent Knesset members to run in districts as part of the primaries for the Likud list. Following the petitions, Likud decided to establish a special committee headed by retired judge Ne'eman, chairman of the elections committee, along with three additional members from the elections, finance, and constitution committees, to examine the claims and provide a rapid response. Attorney Yair Gabai, a prominent candidate in the Jerusalem district, argues that the approval of the clause by a majority of only five votes does not meet the requirements of the Likud constitution, which requires a two-thirds majority of convention members. Another urgent petition was filed by Channel 14 commentator Eddie Cohen, who is running in the immigrants' slot, to prevent the candidacy of MK Tsaga Melaku, claiming that she immigrated to Israel about a decade before 1993 and therefore does not meet the definition of a new immigrant.
