Probability of a large-scale drone attack: helicopter squadron redeployed to northern Israel

The 190th combat helicopter squadron "Maga ha-Kesem" has been relocated from the southern Ramon Airbase to the northern Ramat David Airbase. The decision, made following the investigation of the October 7 events, will ensure a permanent helicopter presence near the northern border. The squadron will be prepared for a scenario involving a simultaneous attack by hundreds of drones. The redeployment required restructuring operational and logistical systems and affected the families of service members.

On Wednesday, August 19, it was reported that the 190th combat helicopter squadron "Maga ha-Kesem" ("Magic Touch") was relocated from the Ramon Airbase in the south to the Ramat David Airbase in northern Israel. The decision was made following the investigation of the October 7 events and aims to ensure a permanent presence of combat helicopters near the northern border. Previously, the defense of the north relied on a limited deployment of helicopters; now the fleet is divided between the north and south of the country. The Air Force believes this will allow for faster response to sudden attacks. The squadron pilot, Major O., explained that one of the reasons was the need to be prepared for a scenario of a simultaneous attack by hundreds of drones. During the "Iron Swords" war, the squadron supported ground units in Gaza and near the northern border, participated in the confrontation with Iran, and intercepted drones. The redeployment required restructuring operational, technical, and logistical systems. Technical specialists traveled south for about a year to train on maintaining new helicopters. The move affected the families of service members, who had to relocate their lives to the north. The squadron was established in 1980 and participated in the Lebanon wars and the Second Intifada.
