Liberman to coalition chairman: convene the Knesset during recess to pass immediate draft law

Avigdor Liberman, chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu, sent a letter today (Monday) to coalition chairman MK Ofir Katz demanding that the Knesset plenum be convened during the summer recess to pass an immediate draft law. The appeal comes after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement against the temporary arrest law, in which he said the law was meant to lower the flames and increase the number of recruits in the Haredi public, but in practice it failed. Netanyahu added that there would be no such law in the next government, and that after the elections a broad national government would be formed that would immediately pass a full draft law that would meet the IDF's needs, and those who do not study Torah would enlist or go to prison. Liberman argued that if this is indeed the Prime Minister's position, there is no justification to wait until after the elections, especially since the State of Israel needs a full draft law that would address the IDF's needs and the principle of equality in the burden. He emphasized the government's authority to convene the plenum even during recess, especially on issues that are the order of the day, and noted the unprecedented burden on reserve and regular soldiers. Liberman called for immediate convening and pledged that all Zionist opposition factions would stand behind the law and vote for it.
