Killer AI Mission: For the First Time in the War, an Autonomous Russian Drone Killed Civilians in Ukraine

A Russian drone equipped with an experimental AI system killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia, in the first documented case where an autonomous vehicle independently selected a target and caused civilian deaths. The drone, identified by an Nvidia Jetson Orin computer, was pre-programmed to fly to a gas station but chose the precise target itself—propane gas tanks.

A small Russian drone, resembling a miniature aircraft, equipped with an experimental artificial intelligence system, killed three civilians in the city of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine on July 6. The attack occurred at a gas station, where the drone dove into a wall and exploded. Among the dead was 19-year-old student Tetyana Bovynets. Examination of the drone's wreckage revealed it contained a tiny Nvidia Jetson Orin computer, sold on the commercial market. Ukrainian researchers were able to view the terrain images fed into the system and examine parts of the code, finding that the drone was trained to identify propane tanks and attack them without final approval from a human operator. Experts determined this is the first documented case where a Russian autonomous system caused civilian deaths. Kateryna Bondar from the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Washington described the component as "the best evidence" of Russian experiments with autonomous systems. Colonel Serhiy Minyayev, commander of air defense in Zaporizhzhia, warned that "in a few years, we will be living inside a 'Terminator' movie."
