The Khan Younis Municipality warned of a worsening water crisis in the city due to declining production and severe damage. It confirmed that all 40 water wells went out of service during the aggression, and some were restarted with efficiency not exceeding 40%. Production dropped from about 30,000 cubic meters per day to between 4,000 and 5,000 cubic meters, while available quantities do not exceed 15,000 cubic meters per day, which does not meet the needs of about 600,000 citizens. The per capita share does not exceed 8 liters per day, and 15 water sector workers were killed.
The Khan Younis Municipality warned on Monday, August 3, 2026, of a rapidly worsening water crisis in the city, due to continued targeting of infrastructure and declining operational capacity of water wells, which directly affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens. The municipality explained that all 40 water wells went out of service during the aggression, before crews managed to restart some of them with efficiency not exceeding 40%, amid the significant damage to the water system. It stated that water production dropped from about 30,000 cubic meters per day to only between 4,000 and 5,000 cubic meters, while available daily quantities do not exceed 15,000 cubic meters, an amount that does not meet the needs of about 600,000 citizens in the city. It added that the per capita share of water does not exceed 8 liters per day, at a time when large areas of Khan Younis suffer from severe thirst due to the acute shortage of supplies. The municipality pointed out that 15 water sector workers were killed while performing their duty, stressing that supply lines are subject to frequent interruptions due to military operations, which exacerbates the water crisis and hinders efforts to deliver water to residents.
